If rumors are to be believed, LG Display will supply information displays for Tesla Motors new Model 3 sedans. According to an insider close to the company, the main aim of the project is to grab a key contract for center consoles from another supplier.
With over 130,000 people ordering the electric car in a couple of hours from the launch, the success of the vehicle priced at $35000 is critical to the Silicon Valley automaker’s growth plans.
Touted to a big feather in LG Display’s product catalog, the company is gearing towards expanding into auto electronics which offer higher margins and more stable earnings prospects than consumer products.
Featured with a huge tablet like information screen on the center console, the Model 3 prototype reflects the trend towards bigger in-car displays that offer more features.
According to unconfirmed sources, LG Display is a sole supplier for the 15-plus inch centre display of Model 3. Moreover, another leading undisclosed company is providing centre information displays for Tesla’s Model S and Model X.
