WhatsApp Gold is a scam. There are widespread reports about the launch of WhatsApp Gold mobile app and users are starting to receive messages inside their WhatsApp account. However, security analysts have warned users that WhatsApp Gold is nothing but scam. The app is capable of stealing content in the form of contacts, images and videos silently on the background.
A popular newspaper reported that several WhatsApp users have been receiving messages to upgrade to an exclusive
version of the app called WhatsApp Gold. You will get a link from the spammer, through which you will be asked to upgrade the app. The message will have a statement that WhatsApp Gold is exclusive for top celebrities.
To attract users, the message will have a description stating that there are several features in the enhanced version of the app like free calling, new themes, ability to send bulk pictures, new emojis, extended security measures and much more.
If you download the update, the app code infects the phone with a malware that could steal user data, track user activities and even get personal details stored in other apps on the phone.
Previously, the same WhatsApp Gold was running under the name of Plus. After that WhatsApp has implemented asecurity protection feature, which automatically prompts the user to delete the upgraded app, if installed.
Even though WhatsApp had issued warnings against these kind of spam messages, several senior citizens and not-so-tech- savvy users consider them as real and installs the app, which in turn will prove fatal in long run.
As long as people are attracted by bogus offers, cyber criminals will continue to exploit their weakness. It remains to be seen how WhatsApp is going to deal with this situation.
