Android 7.0 Nougat Features: Doze, Notifications, Multi-window, Data saver and more

Android 7.0 Nougat has been released for select Nexus devices. If you have a Nexus device, you can sign up for the Google Android Developer Beta program to download the new release. You can also install the new Android platform manually but the issue is pretty complicated. In this article, we will explore the new features of Android 7.0 Nougat.

Doze Update

Even though Doze is available with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the feature has been refreshed in the Android 7.0 Nougat. The Doze effect enables you to place the device in a semi-sleep mode to save battery life if the device has not been used for a long period of time. However, the Doze mode will now work while the user is on the move.

Notifications

With the new Notifications feature, you will be able to view all the notifications produced by an app. It is possible to make use of the new Direct Reply feature to reply to messages directly from notifications. You can also press and hold the notifications to navigate to the app’s settings. The new feature also provides an ability to silence all notifications producing from the app. It is also possible to customize the Quick Settings tiles for the notification shade.

Multi-Window

Android 7.0 Nougat offers a multi-window feature, which enables you to display two apps side-by-side on your device. To work with the feature, you need to press and hold on the first app and then drag to one side of the screen. You can open another app via the Recent apps screen. However, the multi-window app will not be compatible with all Android apps and will work in both landscape and portrait orientations.

Data Saver

With data saver feature, you will be able to restrict apps from using mobile data in the background. It can be accessed through the Quick Settings menu or through the Data Usage option in Settings.

Decreased space for apps

According to Google, the Android 7.0 Nougat has the capability to install apps 75 percent faster and will take up 50 percent less storage compared to the currently available Android platforms. The reason for this new feature is attributed to the integration of a new JIT compiler.

New keyboard theme

With Android 7.0 Nougat, you will be able to customize the theme of the Android keyboard. Google has added 16 keyboard themes. Moreover, you can also choose an image stored in the device as the background for the keyboard.

Cleaner recent menu

If you are not using apps for some time, the relevant apps are automatically closed in the Recents menu. This will enable you to view less cluttered navigation. With a new Clear All button, you will be able to close all the running apps on the device at the same time.

Easter Egg

Google has integrated a Neko Atsume Clone Easter Egg in Android 7.0 Nougat, which is a clone of the kitten collector mobile game Neko Atsume.

Virtual Reality

Google has finally provided support for virtual reality mode in Android 7.0 Nougat. The full potential of this feature can be explored in the upcoming months when new smartphones will be launched with robust Virtual Reality (VR) support.

In addition to the above-mentioned features, Android 7.0 Nougat ships with plenty of new enhancements.
