Apple is gearing up to manufacture iPhones aimed for the Indian market from Bengaluru under Make in India initiative. There are reports that talks are in full swing to establish a manufacturing facility in India. If the Cupertino-based giant manages to establish a manufacturing hub in India, it will be a big boost for the Make in India initiative.
According to reports, Wistron is currently setting up a facility in Peenya to manufacture iPhones with the production expected to start from April 2017. To recall, Wistron is a Taiwan-based OEM maker for Apple.
Meanwhile, Apple sources confirmed that the company is indeed very serious about starting the assembly operations and manufacturing of iPhones by the end of 2017. Based on credible reports, we can confirm that Bangalore will be the destination for iPhone manufacturing even though other locations are taken into account.
According to industry analysts, the manufacturing of iPhone locally will enable Apple to cut costs substantially. Currently, the import of iPhone attract 12.5% additional duty, which is passed to the customers.
Previously, Foxconn had disclosed that they are willing to establish a manufacturing plant in Maharashtra. However, the plan was reportedly dropped since Foxconn was actually planning to manufacture smartphones of other major companies such as Xiaomi and OnePlus on the facility. Apple doesn’t like this kind of approach since they would like to have their own exclusive manufacturing facility.
