Samsung and LG are expected to unveil smartphones with foldable displays either in Q3 or Q4 2017. According to sources, the Samsung Galaxy X1 will hit the retail shelves in Q2 2017. Moreover, the company is also gearing up to launch another foldable phone in Q3 2017.
Meanwhile, The Korea Herald reported the company is planning to roll out more than 100000 units of foldable handsets in the Q3 2017. As of this writing, we don’t have any information about the name for the phone. However, it is widely reported that the new phone will be a fold-out device.
If the fold-out smartphone becomes a reality, the display stays on the outside when folded. However, when you unfold it, the display panel will expand to look like a 7-inch tablet. Interesting Isn’t it?
Although Samsung had revealed the folding display technology long time back, the company was skeptical of launching due to customer response. Apparently, Samsung sensed the mind of Tim Cook-owned Apple and LG, who are planning to launch foldable phones in 2017. Based on reports, we infer that Apple is scheduled to launch a foldable display variant of iPhone 8.
The Korea Herald, meanwhile, reports that the foldable display technology adopted by LG is superior to Samsung. LG is planning to add few secret key features to combat competition such as the use of a stylus in the foldable display.
Even though Samsung and LG have showcased the foldable display technology at CES shows, it never came to reality. Will 2017 prove to be a game-changer in the smartphone display arena? Let’s wait and watch.
