Alcatel expected to launch modular smartphones at MWC 2017

Modular smartphone

Alcatel is gearing up to launch five smartphones at MWC 2017. According to reports, among the five smartphones, one of them will be modular. Previously, there were reports that Sony is scheduled to launch five new handsets at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It has become a habit for the companies to unveil new handsets during trade shows.

As of this writing, we don’t have any information about the features and specifications of the rumored smartphones. However, we have information from credible leaks that one of the handsets will be modular. The main advantage of the new technology is that you will be able to perform various tasks through replaceable back covers.

To recall, LG had introduced a similar mechanism in LG G5 flagship smartphone, but it failed miserably because of the cost factor. Moreover, Motorola also created something such as Snap-on magnetic accessories for Moto Z, but it also failed.

In the case of the rumored Alcatel handset, you should purchase a replaceable back cover module to modify the parameters. However, we don’t know the kind of functionality these modules will serve. Will it be a battery to provide enhanced backup?

Interestingly, an image leaked on the web showcases the top and bottom portions of the rear of an upcoming handset with a cover on it. The cover consists of an array of LEDs. We infer that the bulbs will glow in several colors in sync with the music being played.

Coming to specifications, the upcoming Alcatel modular smartphone will ship with a 13MP sensor with support for dual-tone LED flash. When you talk about internals, the phone will be integrated with an unnamed MediaTek Helio processor.

Regarding price, we expect the forthcoming Alacatel modular phone to cost EUR 320 and above for the unlocked variant. Stay tuned for the Alcatel press conference on February 26 at the grand MWC 2017.
