If you are unable to view a message notification on your Xiaomi Mi Max, it will take few days to receive because of the nature of OTA rollouts. However, you can manually verify the presence of the update by navigating to Settings | About device | System update option.

You should note that the update is a full-blown Android Nougat. Hence, you cannot simply download and install with 20 percent battery. You need to completely charge the handset to the maximum because the download size will be more than 1GB. Furthermore, you should establish connectivity with Wi-Fi as well to avoid excess data charges.
