Samsung Display is gearing up to build the biggest OLED manufacturing plant in South Korea to speed up the production of flexible OLD displays. Touted to be integrated with the upcoming iPhone 8, the handset infused with an OLED display is expected to lower power consumption coupled with enhanced visuals.
If you are unaware, Samsung Display is in control of over 98 percent of market share when it comes to the manufacture of small and medium flexible OLED display. The plants will be established in Asan and Cheonin at an estimated construction cost of $1.75. Moreover, the company needs to spend $14 billion for fabricating OLED display panels.
According to sources, Samsung Display is planning to construct world’s biggest OLED plants which will have more than 30 per cent of production capacity. Moreover, the plant will be bigger than A3, which currently serves as the biggest plant. The upcoming new plant will have a capacity to produce 180,000 panels per month. However, the plant can scale up to 270000 panels per month.
The purpose of the new OLED plant is to create another manufacturing hub for the manufacture of another 270,000 display panels. The initiative will not only generate employment but also helps the company to supply display panels to various companies.
Ever since the Cupertino-based tech giant started to place orders for OLED displays in Q2 2015, the Samsung Display has started to extend the A3 plant. The demand is more than the supply. Going forward, there will be a huge demand for OLED display panels and the company has anticipated it well in advance.
Talking about the specifications, the Apple iPhone 8 is expected to ship with a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display instead of the standard 5.1-inch panel. The phone will also feature a 3D facial scanner. According to a report published on ETNews, the Samsung Display should increase the production output to reduce the price. Apple should fix the price for the iPhone 8 competitively to attract customers. Otherwise, it would prove a nightmare for both Samsung and Apple.
