Google Pixel 2 Expected To Integrate Always-On Display mode

Google is gearing up to launch the next-generation Pixel 2 smartphones in October 2017. According to rumors, the upcoming Google Pixel and Pixel 2 handset will be integrated with an Always-On Display mode. You will find this feature only with the flagship Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8 handset.

The rumor assumes significance with XDA Developers dug through the latest Android O Developer Preview 3. The team managed to decompile the SystemUIGoogle.apk file and found traces of evidence that hints at the possible addition of the Always-On Display mode deep inside the code.

<PreferenceScreen android:title=”@string/tuner_doze” android:key=”doze”>
<com.android.systemui.tuner.TunerSwitch android:title=”@string/tuner_doze_always_on” android:key=”doze_always_on” sysui:defValue=”false” />

According to XDA Developers, the parameter “doze” in the code is an internal name to denote the Ambient Display. It should not be related with the Doze power saving mode, introduced with the Android Nougat.

At this point in time, we are unable to provide any assurance regarding the integration of the Always-On Display mode. The above code was located deep inside the hidden SystemUI Tuner menu.

The developers at XDA added that they are unable to access this feature in the Android O Developer Preview 3. Even after setting the sysui:defValue to “true” and completion of the recompilation, they are unable to access the modified APK file to the boot with the Pixel handset.

We will continue to keep track of the developments and keep you updated. Stay tuned with NetAns.
