Samsung is gearing up to launch the much-awaited Samsung Galaxy S9 series smartphones at MWC 2018. A new patent has been published by WIPO for a Samsung smartphone, which hints at the integration of a full-screen display coupled with an in-display fingerprint sensor and a pressure sensitive display. The patent was first spotted by letsgodigital and mentioned on Forbes.
Upon inspection of the patent design, we infer that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 will ship with an enhanced screen-to-body ratio when compared with the Galaxy S8. We are unable to find any bezels on the bottom of the handset.
The patent also reveals the on-screen navigation bar, which was introduced in 2017 along with the Galaxy S8. You will find a menu, home, and back-key on the bar. As a user, you will be able to unlock the smartphone via the home button that also serves as a fingerprint scanner.
You will be able to navigate to the home full screen with a light pressure. The home button is designed in such a way that if it is pressed a little deeper, the microphone will be activated. A hard press on the home button will reveal the list of applications installed on the smartphone.
It is also possible to adjust the configuration of three icons by pressing the back button. If you press the back button little deeper, you will be able to find extra icons. The new design as spotted by the patent will be applicable for LCD, LED, AMOLED, and OLED displays.
The chances of Samsung integrating the above designs with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are bleak. However, we expect the design to find the light with the upcoming Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy X. We will continue to keep track of the developments and provide you with updates. Stay tuned.
