Government slashes Customs duty on Indian Motorcycles with immediate effect

In a significant development, Government of India has slashed customs duty on imported bikes following rationalization of the duty structure. Previously, the import of bikes with engine capacity of less than 800cc attracted 60% duty. In case of more than 800cc bikes, the duty imposed is that of 75 percent.

With rationalization, the customs duty has been slashed by 50% across a wide range of imported bikes. The customs duty has been raised from 10% to 15% for Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units. When it comes to the Completely Built engines (CBU), the customs duty will be 25% instead of 20%.

As per the revised pricing, Indian Scout Sixty will cost Rs. 10,99,500, while the price of the Indian Scout will be Rs. 12,69,500. The cost of other imported bikes are shown below

  • Indian Scout Bobber: Rs. 11,99,000
  • Indian Chief Dark Horse: Rs. 18,81,000
  • Indian Chief Classic: Rs. 21,29,500
  • Indian Chief Vintage: Rs. 25,32,500
  • Indian Springfield: Rs. 33,50,000 onwards
  • Indian Chieftain: Rs. 32,01,000 onwards
  • Indian Roadmaster: Rs. 39,00,000 onwards

Interestingly, Harley Davidson and Ducati, popular bike manufacturers also slashed the prices of its vehicles following reduction on customs duty. the imported bikes will be available from showrooms and dealers in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Cochin, Guwahati, Jaipur and New Delhi. To recall, US President Donald Trump and his administration had expressed displeasure over higher customs duties charged by India.
