In 2017, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced that people will be able to create customized Virtual IDs. the system has been implemented and you can create your own 16-digit Virtual ID aka VID directly from the official UIDAI portal.
It is to be noted that the VID will be a temporary number on top of your original Aadhaar number. You can give the VID to avail various benefits without exposing your original Aadhaar number. If you are concerned about the privacy of your Aadhaar number, you can generate VID.
Steps to create Aadhaar Virtual ID
To generate Aadhaar VID, you need to navigate to resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/vidgeneration and provide your Aadhaar Number and security code. The system will generate OTP, which you will receive on the smartphone.
You can either generate or retrieve VIDs. If you are a first-timer, you can generate the VID. If you forgot the VID, you can easily retrieve the ID. The entire process is simple and can be completed within one single dashboard. After the generation of the Aadhaar Virtual ID, you should provide the 16-digit VID to avail all the benefits.
What is Aadhaar Virtual ID?
Aadhaar Virtual ID is a temporary number, which can be generated using your original Aadhaar number. The main purpose of the initiative is to mask the original Aadhaar number for enhanced privacy control. You just need to provide your VID without disclosing the original number.
What will happen if I generate two VIDs?
It’s not at all possible to generate two VIDs using one single Aadhaar number. If you create a second VID after the creation of the first VID, then the old VID will be automatically revoked. Hence, you will not be able to make use of the old VID.
