Microsoft is gearing up to acquire GitHub. According to reports coming in, the Redmond-based giant has reportedly held talks with GitHub for possible acquisition. The news assumes importance with the company working on to develop code-centric programming tools such as Visual Studio.
Moreover, the code hosting platform is currently operating without a CEO because of the exit of its founder in 2017. It remains to be seen as to whether Microsoft will retain all the employees after the deal. There is a possibility that Microsoft could integrate the platform into Visual Studio.
There were reports that Microsoft and GitHub have entered into talks a few years back but it was not fruitful. The company is making a second attempt to convince GitHub for a possible acquisition. Microsoft will not leave anything which is code oriented. They will make all efforts to somehow grab the reins of the coding platform.
According to CNBC, Microsoft is planning to invest $35 million in a bid to push sales and marketing of GitHub. The code hosting platform has been valued at $2 billion and an acquisition will yield Microsoft anywhere between $4 to $5 billion. With Microsoft strongly advocating the use of open-source, the acquisition will prove beneficial for the open source community.
