Amazon India has opened its third fulfilment centre (FC) in West Bengal ahead of Prime Day 2018. The new centre spreads over 140,000 square feet with over 600,000 cubic feet of storage space. The main aim of the new centre is to enable faster delivers to customers in the state. Moreover, it will empower and motivate thousands of small and medium business establishments to sell on Amazon.in.
According to Amazon, the company will have 67 operational fulfilment centers in 13 states across the country with an overall storage space of 20 million cubic feet. With just a few days left for the grand Amazon Prime Day, the launch of a new fulfilment center assumes great significance. Moreover, it will enable the company to deliver products within one or two days from the order placement date.
Commenting on the development, Akhil Saxena, Vice President, Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India disclosed that the company has been consistently investing in infrastructure and delivery network to increase the delivery speed. The company is confident of delivering items to customers quickly with the launch of the third fulfilment center. Moreover, the sellers will be able to not only make use of the local infrastructure but also save capital.
Responding to media, Akshay Sahi, Director & Head – Amazon Prime revealed that Prime members will be able to enjoy fast delivery turnaround on a wide range of products. With Amazon Prime, customers will be able to enjoy ad-free unlimited music experience with free shipping for all products.
The Fulfilment By Amazon (FBA) system enable sellers to send their products to the relevant FCs. After the order placement, Amazon will pick, pack and ship the order to the customers with efficient customer service. Amazon will also be responsible for management of returns on behalf of the sellers.
In a statement released to the press, Amazon has over 8500 sellers in West Bengal with nearly 4500 sellers in Kolkata itself. The company saw a steep rise in the Prime membership with people from Siliguri, Alipurduar, Bankura, Birbhum being part of the program.
