Xiaomi has reportedly established a partnership with ISRO for the introduction of NavIC chipsets. According to reports, the US-based Qualcomm is also working on chipsets that will provide support for NavIC. There are reports that both Xiaomi and ISRO have tied up with Qualcomm for the development of NavIC chipsets. Moreover, the international body 3GPP has approved the usage of NavIC in collaboration with Qualcomm.
If you are unaware, NavIC is the Indian version of GPS technology and is the operational name of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). If the deal goes through, then Xiaomi will be the first company to make use of the chips that support NavIC.
The NavIC chipsets will provide precise and accurate location information services to users based in India. The chipset will have the capability to extend up to 1500 km coverage area from the primary service area. Going forward, Xiaomi will most likely launch upcoming smartphones with NavIC chipsets.
ISRO developed IRNSS for the purpose of terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation including disaster management, vehicle tracking, and other related services. The system will provide Standard Positioning Service and Restricted Service to all users with a position accuracy of 20 meters in the main location area.
