Google Meet receives noise cancellation capability via Cloud denoiser

Google Meet has been upgraded with AI-enabled noise cancellation functionality tagged as Cloud denoiser. The purpose of this feature is to bring an improved video calling experience. You will not experience background noise during video conversations because of the Cloud denoiser feature.

According to VentureBeat, the Cloud denoiser feature will be pushed gradually. Hence, it will take few days for the new functionality to reflect on your device. The reports suggest that the Cloud denoiser will be available for web users initially followed by Android mobile users. The denoiser mechanism is designed to eliminate background noise.

During his demonstration, Serge Lachapelle, G Suite director of product management explained the usage of the Cloud Denoiser. He was able to successfully catch the sounds made by a snack bag, clicking pen and rotating a metal object in a glass. Lachapelle added that the noise-cancellation capability is capable of filtering out other background distractions such as dogs barking, kids crying, and applause.

The Cloud Denoiser makes use of machine learning technology, which can easily distinguish between noise and speech. To enable filtering of the background noise, the voice of the sender is sent from the device to Google, where it goes through a series of machine learning model checks. The voice gets re-encrypted and sent back to the Google Meet call after the successful completion of the processing. You can now avoid ambient noises including dog barking, keystrokes as you capture notes during the meeting.

To manage Cloud Denoiser, you need to navigate to Google Meet and click on Settings. You should then select the audio option to modify the setting. The noise cancellation option will be enabled by default. You can also disable noise cancellation feature based on your requirements.

The Cloud Denoiser capability is currently being pushed to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers. The feature will be available for the web users followed by Android and iOS users. You should note that only the sender can control the noise-canceling feature. The receiver won’t be able to manage noise cancellation for the sound they hear.
