Google lost control over throwing millions of sites inaccessible

Google, the search engine giant has reportedly forgot to renew the domain – With over 40 million search results, bloggers have been making use of to spread their musings, writings, and other content. As of this writing, over million of pages hosted on have been inaccessible since Google lost control over the domain. However, the links are accessible if “in” is replaced with ‘com”. It should not be the case.

Google has country-specific domains and is one of the most used by bloggers. From our point of view, professional bloggers will never make use of Blogspot and they host on their own. This is the reason why you should never create a hosted blog. The risk is higher since you are dependant upon third-party companies.

If you own a blog with, you will not be automatically redirected to You have to manually replace the domain prefix, which is not possible in all cases. The National Internet Exchange of India is in charge of the .in domains and they haven’t responded to media queries.

We checked with “” and found that the domain is currently owned by Moreover, the creation date is given as June 24, 2020, with the next expiry date as June 24, 2021. The owner had updated the domain information on July 29. It seems that Google has not renewed the domain and another person purchased and listed for sale for $6000. We don’t have any clear indication as to when Google lost control with the domain name.

There are two possibilities. Google forgot to renew the domain, which is bleak considering the corporate nature of the company. The second possibility is that Google deliberately ignored to renew the domain leaving the hard work of millions of users at stake. Google should show commitment if they are really concerned about bloggers.

You should note that hosting a blog on hosted platforms like WordPress, Blogspot is always risky since you are the behest of the relevant companies. We can’t tell when these companies will shut the doors. Even though WordPress can be believed to some extent, you should not take it for granted.

Google is highly risky when it comes to web hosting because of the uneven past of the company. The best way to avoid any tension is to invoke self-hosting. With self-hosted blogs, you will have full control over your database, files, and other related content. If you haven’t yet started yet, then it’s high time that you venture into the world of self-hosted blogs. You will get a discount if you purchase hosting packages via HostGator.
