Twitter is scheduled to restart the Blue tick verification program starting January 22. The Blue tick badge on Twitter indicates that you are an established person with a credible identity. The verification program was started on November 16, 2017, but was paused after hearing user feedback. The company felt that the policy framed at that time was arbitrary and confusing to several people. The social media microblogging platform announced in November 2020, that they will reintroduce the verification system in 2021 after hearing public feedback.
Twitter has released a detailed outline as to who are entitled for the verification badge. Moreover, if any verified account is inactive or incomplete for a long time, then the verification badge from that particular account will be deactivated.
Firstly, there is no need for a Twitter user to upload a profile bio or header image to receive the verification badge. The company has changed the News category to News and Journalists. Moreover, the Sports category has been renamed as Sports and esports. The main reason for the change is because of the inclusive nature. The Entertainment category has been refreshed to include digital content creators, which paves way for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram celebrities.
Twitter will count followers on a per-region basis instead of a per-country basis. This will make follower count requirements less susceptible to spam. The Jack Dorsey-led company will add more categories such as academics, scientists and religious leaders by 2022. However, the extended category such as Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals will be available for disposal for all other people who work in specific fields. The other categories include Government, companies, brands, organizations, sports, and gaming.
To apply for Blue badge verification, users should select “Request Verification” option from within the Account Settings page via both the web or app. It is also required for the users to submit the required links including other supported materials. According to Twitter, the company will make use of both automated and human review processes to process applications. The option to share demographic application should also be considered by users reveals the company.
That being said, Twitter is scheduled to remove blue ticks automatically from inactive and incomplete accounts starting January 22. Twitter claims that a complete account should provide a verified email address or phone number includinga profile image and display name.
Twitter will rollout the blue tick verifiation system on January 22. The company could receive plenty of requests from users globally and hence a delay for approval can be expected. It is advisable to apply early ecause the social media giant could remove the program if there are sheer number of requests.
