Microsoft slated to end support and upgrade for Windows 8.1: All you need to know

Microsoft will end support and security updates for Windows 8.1 with effect from January 10, 2023. You will not be able to fetch security updates for Windows 8.1 starting January 2023. Microsoft has encouraged users to upgrade to Windows 11. This is because Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 from 2025 and hence it will be optimum to upgrade to Windows 11 now itself since it will be future-proof. Moreover, Windows 11 ships with amazing features not available with Windows 10.

Windows 8.1 was comparatively stable operating system after the dismal performance of Windows 8. Even though Windows 7 was one of the best performing platforms during that time, the Redmond-based software giant ventured into the development and release of Windows 8. Both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 were touch-friendly. We saw the emergence of plenty of touch-enabled laptops pre-loaded with Windows 8.

With the rapid development of Windows 11, the usage of Windows 8.1 is very low now among tech circles. Windows 11 ships with several new features such as improved multitasking via Snap Windows, Search highlights, Tabbed File Explorer, and much more. You will not receive any technical support or software updates after January 10, 2023. However, you will be able to work with Windows 8.1 without software updates. If you want to work in a secure and productive way, then you should upgrade to either Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Microsoft has published a list of FAQs, which addresses questions related to the termination of Windows 8.1 support. Your device will be vulnerable to several risks including attacks from wired or wireless connections. You should also note that Microsoft 365 will also be terminated from support if your device works with Windows 8.1 after January 10. The main reason is due to the fact the company adopts Modern Lifecycle policy with which users should stay updated with the latest software offerings.
