Google likely to crack its whip on employee travel

Google is reportedly planning to limit employee travel in a bid to crack down on the surging expenses. According to reports, the search engine giant has reportedly limited employee travel only to business-critical trips. Moreover, the social functions and team offsites should not be approved. The company is well known for giving perks and it looks like Google is tightening its belt.

As per a leaked email, Google has emailed to few senior managers to limit employee travel to business-critical trips. Going forward, there will be high bar and will be limited only to mission-critical travel. Travel for social functions, team offsites, and travel to in-person events will no longer be approved.

A Google spokesperson disclosed that they recently shared guidance about taking a responsible approach to expense management, which includes travel and events. The individual product management group can decide the best course of action. Google has a long history of offering its employees with free meals, alcohol, and gyms. In all probability, the access to these services will be restricted if the volatile economic slowdown continues.

A Google Insider, who refuses to reveal the identity has added that Google CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed a desire to simplify the company and enhance employee productivity. Pichai reportedly told the Code Conference attendees that he wants to make the company 20% efficient and this could involve slashing of workforce by 20% for the time being. We don’t have any information regarding when the company will initiate the layoffs. Let’s wait and watch.
