Sriram Krishnan Defends Paid Twitter Blue Verification System

Sriram Krishnan has been the talk of the town ever since Elon Musk took over the complete charge of Twitter. The latest development is that he has defended the newly proposed $8 Twitter Blue Verification System by Elon Musk. He added that several of his critics of the new system are logically inconsistent. The aim is to plug the impersonation of users. Moreover, if the Twitter team finds someone has done impersonation, they will lose all money including the Twitter Blue verification badge.

Sriram revealed that there are several people who should be verified but they are not in reality. This will lead to impersonation. He added that the current path on any social network is opaque and hence the cost of $8 provides a consistent path for users regardless of their notability level. He said that the current model of Twitter verification has severe spam issues.

According to former Microsoft employee, social media verification was originally meant to solve for “this person is who they say they are”. You will not be able to easily say “we judge this person to be notable”. You need not have to DM employees for a favor. Even though Sriram is in favour of the new Twitter Blue verification system, there will be improvements after the initial rollout. However, his team is interested to check out the feedback from the community.

Amidst mass Twitter layoffs, Sriram was in news recently when Elon Musk appointed him as a consultant to help grow Twitter. He will not be the CEO but will assist Musk in his efforts to scale Twitter. After graduating from SRM College, Sriram landed at Microsoft where he continued till May 2011. He then joined Facebook, where he was in charge of product/business strategy, development, and execution. Sriram then had brief tenure with Snap and Twitter. He quit Twitter to become an investor and advisor for several top companies. He is currently a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz and has invested in Crypto. He co-hosts video podcast series along with his wife Aarthi Ramamurthy. The couple interacted with Elon Musk, Mark Zukerberg, Naomi Osaka, AR Rahman, and much more.
