Microsoft has officially pushed tabbed Notepad functionality for Windows Insiders. The tabbed Notepad feature will be available in Notepad version 11.2212.330.0 for Windows 11 to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. You have to update Notepad from Microsoft Store to experience the capabilities of tabbed Notepad. According to Microsoft, the multiple tabs support was the top requested feature from the Windows 11 community. You will be able to create, manage, and organize multiple text files from within a single Notepad window.
You will be able to continue to work with files across multiple windows by dragging a tab out of its own window. It’s also possible to customize the behavior of files. You can specify whether the files should open in new tabs or a new window by default. You will also find new keyboard shortcut keys for the management of tabs including enhancements to unsaved files management.
The updated Notepad automatically generates the file name/tab title based on content. Microsoft has disclosed that the latest Notepad update has couple of issues that could impact your overall experience. There could be few issues related to certain keyboard shortcuts. The product team will continue to optimize performance to ensure high standards of performance, reliability, and compatibility with Notepad. You can expect continued updates via Microsoft Store to improve the functionality of the tabbed Notepad module.
To work with Tabbed Notepad feature, you should update the existing Notepad via Microsoft Store.
You have to wait until Windows completes the installation process. You will view Open button when the Microsoft Store completes the installation. If you had enabled Dark Mode previously, you will view tabbed Notepad in the system setting. If your system is light mode, then the refreshed Notepad will open in light mode only. You have to manually change to Dark mode by selecting “Settings” icon located on the top right side and selecting “App theme” option.
The tabbed Notepad works without any flaws. The app automatically generates the file name based on the first line of the content. You can change it while saving the file. We managed to open several tabs without any abnormal resource usage.
The tabbed Notepad is a great functionality, which enables you to enhance productivity to a large extent. You can forget about multiple Notepad windows roaming around the Windows 11 taskbar. You just need to open an instance of Notepad and start to work by opening new tabs as per your requirement.
