Google has announced the discontinuation of Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works starting April 8, 2024. The search engine giant revealed that Nest Secure will not be accessible via the app for Nest users and support will be stopped. However, Nest users will be able to work with all the features until April 2024. Google has encouraged the current Nest users to switch to another system before 2024. The company has provided one-year time a smooth transition.
As part of a smooth transition, Google is currently offering $200 credit for current users of Nest Secure. The credit can be redeemed on the Google Store or an exclusive offer for a self setup system from ADT launched in 2017. Nest Secure includes the Nest Guard, Nest Detect, and Nest Tag.
Google also shunted Dropcam, which is Google Nest’s Wi-Fi-enabled video streaming camera that was launched 10 years ago. The company disclosed that the maintenance of hardware products is challenging and hence the Dropcam support will end on April 8, 2024. You will be able to work until April next year and after that, the camera will stop working and will not be available on the app. Google has advised users to download the video history before the date mentioned. You have plenty of time and hence there is no need to panic.
Google has urged users to purchase Nest Cam instead of using Dropcam. If you are a Nest Aware subscriber, you will be given a new indoor wired Nest Cam for free. Google will throw in 50% discount for other users that can be redeemed for the Nest Cam.
Additionally, Google is also retiring Works with Nest starting September 29, 2o23. It’s a program that connects third-party products to Nest products. The connection will not work after the specified date. Going forward, Google will share a script editor for the creation of advanced home automation with new features and capabilities.
Google is currently shelving products and services that have negligible market share. The company aims to invest in AI including the integration of Bard AI into the search engine itself. Microsoft has already integrated Bing AI into Edge browser and Windows 11. Microsoft has already overtaken Google by miles when it comes to AI. The Redmond-based software giant also released Bing Image Creator, which automatically gives images based on the context.
