Google has unveiled an early Article Summarizer experiment within Search Labs, labeled as SGE while browsing. This functionality is currently accessible via the Google app on Android and iOS, with eventual plans for integration into the Chrome browser on desktop systems. As of this writing, this feature is now available to us in India. Microsoft has already launched Article Summarizer in Bing and is available for consumption worldwide.
The functionality of SGE while browsing revolves around condensing articles into a list of key points produced by artificial intelligence, enabling rapid comprehension of the primary themes presented in the article. Corresponding links will also be generated to facilitate direct navigation to the desired content within the page. Additionally, an “Explore on page” option will be provided, showcasing questions addressed by the article and facilitating swift access to the relevant section for deeper exploration.
Roughly three months back, Google introduced its experimental initiative known as the Search Generative Experience (SGE). Since that time, the company has continuously refined the experience, incorporating enhancements such as the inclusion of videos within some of its auto-generated summaries. The most recent enhancement, however, is geared towards simplifying the interaction with intricate content.
Google’s objective with this innovation is to explore how generative AI can expedite online information navigation and streamline the process of finding pertinent content. Nevertheless, this feature will be limited to specific websites. As outlined by Google, SGE while browsing will exclusively function with articles available to the public on the internet without any access restrictions.
To utilize this tool, users can choose to participate in the SGE experiment. Google also indicates that it’s accessible as an independent experiment within the Search Labs platform, which is not yet available outside the United States.
In addition to the introduction of SGE while browsing, Google has unveiled two additional enhancements to the SGE framework. One of these upgrades enables users to hover over select terms encompassing scientific, economic, historical, and other subjects to receive definitions and visualize related diagrams or images pertinent to the topic. Although no specific launch date has been provided, this feature is expected to be introduced shortly.
The second upgrade is designed to facilitate both novice and proficient coders in comprehending and debugging AI-generated code with ease. Notably, segments of code within summaries will be color-coded with syntax highlighting. This enhancement aims to expedite the identification of distinct code elements. Similar to SGE while browsing, this enhancement is accessible beginning from today.
