Machine translation has been a prominent feature of Gmail on desktop computers. However, this advanced functionality has been notably absent from the Gmail mobile app for Android and iOS. To translate an email using the app, users typically had to copy the email’s content and paste it into a separate translation tool like Google Translate. Fortunately, this inconvenience is becoming a thing of the past, as Gmail is finally integrating in-built email translation into its mobile version.
In an announcement made through its Workspace Updates blog, Google revealed that it has introduced native translation capabilities to the Gmail app on smartphones. Now, when you receive an email in a language different from your chosen display language for Gmail, the app will intuitively prompt you to translate the content.
How to work with Gmail Mobile Transalation?
To work with this feature, you simply need to tap on the dismissible banner located above the email’s content. Once tapped, Google Translate will automatically identify the language of the email and proceed to translate its contents to the best of its abilities. Impressively, this functionality supports a total of 100 languages, mirroring the capabilities of the desktop version.
In cases where the dismissible banner does not appear for any reason, users have an alternative method. By tapping on the three-dot menu, they can manually select the option to translate the email. Additionally, for users proficient in multiple languages who may not require translation for certain languages, there’s an option to manually set languages that should not be translated. Furthermore, users can also designate languages that the app should always translate. These features align seamlessly with the translation behavior found in the desktop version of Gmail.
This translation feature is currently rolling out in a phased manner. However, it’s important to note that it may take up to two weeks for the update to become available on your device. To ensure access to this functionality, make certain that your Gmail app is fully updated to the latest version. You can update Gmail app via Google Play Store on Android and Apple Store on iOS devices.
