Microsoft Photos Gets Better with Super Resolution to Windows Insiders

Microsoft has released a preview of super resolution for Snapdragon-enabled Copilot+ PCs in addition to OCR support and productivity enhancements to the Photos app. This new update is available to Windows Insiders on Windows 11 across all channels such as Dev, Canary, Beta and Release Preview. The Super resolution technology make use of AI to enhance and enlarge images up to 8x the original image size.

Improve Image Quality

You can enhance low-quality photos with the help of Super resolution. Moreover, you can prepare photos for large prints or displays including tight cropping. The Super resolution technology leverages the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on the Copilot+ PC. The required processing are done locally on the PC. The super resolution can be accessed from the Photos Editor to improve the quality of the images quickly.

OCR Support

Microsoft has rolled out Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in the Photos app to enhance productivity. The OCR technology will help you to manage information in your images easily. The app intelligently detects text from your photos via OCR and copy it directly to your clipboard. You can easily copy specific sections and paste them into other apps after the detection of the text. With support for over 160 languages, the OCR functionality can be accessed via the OCR icon located at the bottom of the image.

Microsoft has also introduced single-click support in the Gallery. You can now open individual images with a single click for an efficient navigation. The larger images now automatically resizes to fit within the Viewer window. You can also expect improved synchronization between the zoom slider and the zoon selection. The update also includes bug fixes for the Image Creator and Restyle image functionalities on Copilot+ PCs.

To work with the new Microsoft Photos features, you should update your app to version 2024.11100.17007.0 or higher via the Microsoft Store. This update is currently being rolled out in a phased manner and will take time to visible on your device.
