Hugo Barra will join Facebook in February to build next generation VR and AR products

Xiaomi Global VP Hugo Barra will soon join the social media giant Facebook as Vice President of Virtual Reality. Mark Zuckerberg took to Facebook and shared the information that he is excited to welcome Hugo Barra to join his team.

At Facebook, Barra will be responsible for building next generation Virtual Reality products including Oculus VR headsets. Zuckerberg also added that since Barra is currently in China, they both are in the ultimate world of Virtual Reality.

In his post, Zuckerberg added that he know Barra for a long time right from the days when he developed the Android operating system. He also praised Barra’s efforts to take Xiaomi to the next level by introducing a wide range of innovative products to millions of people.

Meanwhile, Hugo Barra also confirmed the development through Facebook. Barra added that he is excited to share his next adventure and will join Facebook as VP of Virtual Reality.

In his Facebook post, Barra never forgot Xiaomi. He stated that Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun always says that the highest calling of an engineer is to make technology breakthroughs quickly. Moreover, the new technologies should be readily available to the widest possible spectrum of humanity.

Barra said that he is looking forward to building the future of immersive technology with Mark Zuckerberg, Brendan Trexler Iribe, Mike Schroepfer, and the visionaries in the Oculus team.

In the meantime, Zuckerberg said that Barra shares his belief that VR and AR will be the next major computing platform. At Facebook, Barra will be responsible for building new Virtual and Augmented reality products, which will most likely change the way we live in future. The 32-year old Facebook CEO also added that he is waiting for Barra to join his team at Silicon Valley.

    Great Article. It remains to be seen if the AR will be a hit or miss. 3D TV already declared dead by industry pundits. But a good and bold move by Hugo.
