Microsoft’s systems went down globally on July 19, 2024, because of the bad CrowdStrike Falcon Update injected by CrowdStrike. The bug caused several industries, airlines, hospitals, and others to halt their work temporarily.
Microsoft is not responsible for the problem but the issue was related to a buggy CrowdStrike Falcon agent, which the Redmond-based software giant uses in Windows, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft 365. The Windows machines that employ CrowdStrike Falcon agents on-premises and in the cloud via Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud are affected. The issue occurred when CrowdStrike rolled out an update to the Falcon agent, which turned out to be buggy. This has resulted in Blue screen of Death globally, resulting in Windows device shutdown globally. The posts on X indicate that the issue was due to bad C++ coding.
CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz has apologized for the fiasco. He took to X (formerly Twitter) and revealed that the issue was not a security or cyber incident. Their customers are fully protected. The company understands the gravity of the situation and is deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption.
Today was not a security or cyber incident. Our customers remain fully protected.

We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption. We are working with all impacted customers to ensure that systems are back up and they can…
The company is working hard with all the impacted customers to ensure their system works as expected before without data loss as a result of CrowdStrike Falcon agent. Moreover, he added that the core issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed. The issue was related to a CrowdStrike Falcon agent update for Windows Hosts. He also shared links to the official blog, LinkedIn, and X to enable users to know more information.
According to Kurtz, it might take time for systems to recover for the problem but the company is working round the clock to ensure safety. Microsoft disclosed that the issue pertaining to the outage including Microsoft 365 apps and services has been resolved.
The outage has caused significant disruptions in the airline industry, hospitals, IT companies, and much more. It looks like only enterprise companies are affected. There are reports that IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa have experienced issues with online check-in and issue of boarding passes forcing them to switch to manual processes. As of this writing, there are long queues in Delhi airport but authorities are working with Microsoft to solve all the issues by the end of July 20, 2024.
