Google CEO Sundar Pichai disclosed that he had no regrets in firing James Damore last year for widely criticising the activities of the company by issuing a memo. Damore was fired from the company after he allegedly criticized the search engine giant for its diversity policy.
Responding to a query posted by MSNBC, Pichai added that the decision to fire Damore was a right decision and he doesn’t regret it. He said that company looks into the political angle while taking a decision like this. It’s a difficult to arrive at a conclusion but the management viewed it through a policial lens.
In 2017, Damore wrote a 10-page anti-diversity memo and submitted to the company. He was fired because the memo was against the natural practices of the company. Moreover, Pichai said that the contents of the memo are offensive in nature. Meanwhile, Damore filed a class-action lawsuit against Google in January 2018 by stating that the company discriminates against white men.
In his filing before a California court, Damore said that the Google ostracised, belittled and punished him for telling the truth. He also stated that employees who share their views on Google are not only singled out but also mistreated badly. Furthermore, the employees are severely punished and terminated from Google, which is a gross violation of their legal rights.
Interestingly, Wall Street Journal published an article with the caption “Why I Was Fired by Google” in August 2017. That being said Pichai is of the view that the memo issued by Damore was highly offensive.
James Damore launched an exclusive website firedfortruth.com, which provides a detailed overview of the contents included with the memo. He also posted the full document he submitted to the company before he was terminated from his position. Damore has been actively sharing his views on his official Twitter handle – @JamesADamore.
