Microsoft is reportedly working on a new initiative code-named Project Latte, which will integrate Android apps with Windows 10. If Project Latte works out well, then Windows 10 users will be able to run Android app just like their smartphones. The Android app developers will be able to embed apps on Windows 10 with little to no code changes as an MSIX file.
The developers will be able to submit the apps to the Microsoft Store, which will go through review. The project is named Latte and will be available for beta testing before Q1 2021 and will be powered by the Windows Subsystem for Linux. However, the Redmond-based software giant will provide its own Android subsystem to enable Android apps to run properly. Previously, Microsoft made a brave attempt to launch similar project under the codename Astoria but it failed to find the light. It looks like the Windows manufacturer is pretty serious about Project Latte and we can expect a new development soon.
According to Microsoft, WSL will receive support for GUI Linux applications including GPU acceleration that could help in the performance of apps. The big question here is whether Project Latte will provide support for Google Play Services. The answer will be a big no because Google will never allow Play Services like Play Store to be installed on devices other than native Android and Chrome OS. The relevant dependencies related to Play Services API will have to be removed before submission on Windows 10. You can’t expect a full-fledged app experience with Project Latte but you will be able to play with interesting apps on your Windows 10 laptop or mobile device.
You can now run Android apps on your PC with the help of Your Phone app integrated with Windows 10. However, this functionality is limited to select Samsung devices and not always reliable. With the help of Project Latte, you will be able to experience Android app on your PC irrespective of the smartphone you have. The Android apps developers should rewrite the code and UX in such a way that the relevant app is compatible with large-sized display monitors and devices.
We have to wait and watch as to how Project Latte spans out because of its rumored ability to run Android apps on Windows 10 devices. That said, the above information is just a pinch of salt and there is no confirmation from the software giant. We will continue to keep track of the developments.
