Microsoft has joined the Data Protection Consortium, which is a confidential computing consortium. The consortium is a new organization that will be hosted at The Linux Foundation. Microsoft has joined the consortium after the search engine giant Google and Chipmaker Intel joined the data protection consortium.
In addition to Microsoft, Google and Intel, the Data Protection Consortium also includes reputed companies such as Baidu, ARM, IBM, Alibaba, Intel, Red Hat, Tencent, and Swisscom. The main aim of the consortium is to collaborate on open source technology in a bid to support new confidential computing scenarios.
Commenting on the development, Mark Russinovich, CTO, Microsoft Azure disclosed that the data protection consortium will define and accelerate the adoption of confidential computing. The platform provides an opportunity for enterprise companies to collaborate on their datasets without access to data. This will help companies to gain shared insights and for the innovation.
Russinovich added that when computing migrates from on-premises to the public cloud, companies will find it difficult to protect data. He revealed that the computing industry has developed technologies and standards to address data-related scenarios. The crucial fact is that protection of data while in use is often termed as confidential computing.
