Microsoft is gearing up to RTM Windows 10X for the single-screen devices in December 2020 without Win32 apps. The Windows 10X will be ready to ship for installation on a new system by the end of December 2020. We don’t have any information as to when Microsoft will push 10X to Windows Insiders and consumers. Microsoft will release bug fixes and improvements after the initial 10X release in December before pushing them to Windows Insiders. It’s the Windows Insiders who do testing and provide feedback to the product team.
Windows 10X is typically a lightweight option of full-blown Windows 10 and will compete with Chrome OS. According to sources, Microsoft will not be offering 10X to existing hardware. You will have to buy a new device to test drive the new platform. The upcoming Windows 10X will only provide support for UWP and PWAs since the Redmond-based software giant has removed the core technology responsible for the new virtualization technology named VAIL.
According to Microsoft, enterprise customers will be able to run the legacy Win32 apps on Windows 10X with the help of a new Internet-based servicing service. Windows 10X will also be pre-loaded with Office 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Skype, and OneNote. You will be able to work with the apps directly after configuring the device.
Microsoft is also scheduled to release VAIL-centric Windows 10X with Surface Neo support by 2022. To recall, Microsoft has announced Windows 10X, which is a modular version of Windows 10 with support for dual-screen, foldable, and new form factor devices.
